Frequently asked questions about home hearing tests
How can you provide a free home hearing test?
With over 1,000 customers who already receive home service in Greater London, Sound Hearing’s audiologists are always on the move and will likely pass close to your home many times a week. Receiving a free hearing test appointment when we are always nearby is a service we are proud to provide.
Are home hearing tests as accurate as a hearing test in a clinic?
With our compact and portable equipment, we can provide the same diagnostic and accurate hearing tests as a clinic. Special headphones can be used to minimise background noise; however, it is unusual that we find customers who do not have a quiet room suitable for a home hearing test.
The home is also the ideal place to program hearing aids with the sounds and conversations you hear every day.
Can I receive a free hearing test in a Care Home?
Sound Hearing has many patients who are residents of care homes. These hearing tests are free. Some of our customers, whom we first met in their homes, now receive ongoing care in their nursing homes.
Will tinnitus affect my hearing test results?
Tinnitus is commonly a side effect of sensorial-neural (age-related) hearing loss. Tinnitus is often more noticeable in quiet environments, and some people may struggle to distinguish between the sounds presented during a hearing test and their tinnitus. To overcome this, we can play a pulsatile (beeping) sound while conducting the hearing test, allowing the patient to distinguish between the tinnitus and the sound presented in the hearing test.
How often should I have a hearing test?
If you are experiencing hearing loss or are concerned about your hearing, it is advisable to consult a hearing care professional.
The NHS in the UK recommend that adults over 50 get a hearing check every 2-3 years. Early signs include difficulty following conversations in noisy environments and needing the TV louder than other people.
By repeating hearing checks every few years, you can track if your hearing capabilities are changing.
If your lifestyle exposes you to loud noise (musicians, construction workers), it is recommended to check your hearing regularly and use noise protection.
If you have a history of ear infections or have received other treatments using medication toxic to the ear (ototoxic), it is recommended that you have your ears checked annually.
Can you provide a free online hearing test?
Are you unsure if you have hearing loss and don’t want to undergo a full hearing test yet? Sound Hearing offers a free online hearing test service. Our online hearing tests only take around 3 minutes and should be viewed as a hearing screener. It should not be considered a medical diagnosis of hearing loss, but it will identify a potential hearing problem as well as normal hearing.
If the online hearing test identifies a hearing loss, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with an audiologist who can determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
Are online hearing tests accurate?
The results of an online hearing test will not tell what type of hearing loss you may have. It will not identify blockages in the ear canal (e.g, earwax) or any health issue with your eardrum or middle ear. The results of an online hearing test are not accurate enough to program a hearing aid.
