About Phonak

Phonak is part of the Sonova Group, which includes the hearing aid manufacturers Unitron and Hanaston. Sonova was founded in 1947 and employs over 18,000 people worldwide. It is headquartered in Stäfa, Switzerland.

Phonak Infinio and Sphere Infinio are its latest products, released in September 2024. Infinio hearing aids supersede Phonak Lumity and Paradise hearing aids.

Custom-made in-the-ear Phonak Infinio Hearing Aids, the CIC/IIC made from titanium or hard acrylic, were released in early 2025. In June 2025, we are still waiting for the ITC rechargeable Infinio in the UK.

What is the difference between Infinio and Infinio Sphere?

The difference between the Audéo Infinio and Audéo Sphere Infinio models is that the Audéo Sphere Infinio contains an extra chip called DEEPSONIC. The DEEPSONIC chip has been trained using a Deep Neural Network (DNN) with 22 million sound samples. The Spheric Speech Clarity AI system can use these learnings to identify and separate unwanted noise from the speech signal, improving noise reduction and understanding of speech.

Phonak claims that spheric speech clarity provides unprecedented hearing performance and doubles the chances of clean and clear speech in complex listening situations.

Phonak Infinio Sphere hearing aids are slightly larger than Infinio hearing aids; your hearing care professional should be able to show you both styles so you can compare.

Infinio Technology Levels

When Phonak develops a new product, it generally releases it in four technology levels. The product components and casing are all the same; the difference is the software loaded onto the device. The difference in software affects how the hearing aid will perform in background noise situations with multiple voices. The hearing aids performance in quiet situations will be similar at all technology levels.

Phonak has followed the same technology labelling as previous Phonak hearing aid models:

  • Premium – 90
  • Advanced – 70
  • Standard – 50
  • Essential – 30

Which Phonak Infinio Hearing Aid should I buy?

The answer you get will depend on where you buy the hearing aids and the hearing care professional you see.

Sound Hearing will always try to find the best hearing aids for your budget. Our experience has taught us that to have a successful outcome, we need to get three things correct when helping a customer choose hearing aids:

  • Style/Size – a hearing aid that you will be happy to wear.
  • FITA hearing aid that meets your hearing loss requirements and listening needs
  • Budget – Most people have a one

Finding the right hearing aids for you begins with a hearing assessment. Once you have been tested, your hearing care professional should help you find the best Phonak Infinio hearing aids.

Many instinctively want Infinio Titanium, the smallest hearing aid; however, this uses small, size 10 batteries, which need changing every 4 to 5 days. Will your eyesight and dexterity allow you to easily change the batteries and insert and remove the hearing devices?

Often, people feel they need to buy or may be recommended by their hearing care professional to purchase top-of-the-range technology, Infinio Sphere 90. In a utopia where we all have unlimited budgets, then sure, purchase Infinio Sphere 90; however, consider that the AI features in Sphere only automatically turn on in loud background noise situations.

How often are you likely to be in these environments? Some of our customers spend all their time at home in quiet environments. If you buy Sphere 90, the AI features may never be activated.

Other customers may have lifestyles that expose them to complex, noisy environments daily and should consider the best technology their budget allows.

Similarly, we have customers who enjoy but avoid noisy social events because they are concerned that the listening effort will be too great to enjoy the conversations and the event. The best technology for the available budget will be the best option.

Summary

At Sound Hearing, we found that most customers have chosen Phonak Audéo Infinio 50 or Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio 90.

For those with quieter lifestyles, extra technology is still needed to reduce noise when visiting a restaurant or visiting friends and family. Compared to Infinio 30, the Infinio 50 Autosense 6.0 program contains a Comfort in noise and Speech in Car program, which improves listening comfort and helps them follow conversation in cars. 50 technology also includes the Soundrelax feature, which identifies and reduces sudden loud, unwanted sounds.

For customers looking for premium technology and the best listening experience, they can obtain Sphere Infinio 90 technology is predominantly chosen over Sphere Infinio 70 technology. The price difference between the products is relatively small, so customers seem prepared to spend a little extra to get Phonak’s premium product.

Why do manufacturers release different technology levels?

If we assume that the only difference between the Phonak Infinio hearing aids is the software loaded onto them, why do they not just release one model, 90? The 30, 50 and 70 are the same hearing aids as the 90, though with the lower models, technology and features are removed, the cost of production is likely to be the same for each model.

Phonak and all other hearing aid manufacturers likely offer a choice of technology levels for commercial reasons. When given a choice of options and prices, people are more likely to purchase. Research shows that given only one option, people can have “single option aversion” and are less likely to buy, since it triggers an automatic desire to look for more options. Too many choices lead to confusion and hesitation, making people less satisfied with their decisions.

Offering a choice of 3 to 5 options when choosing hearing aids seems to be the correct number, since all manufacturers offer 3 to 5 technology options. Though this may at first glance appear commercially cynical, do consider that hearing aid manufacturers are motivated to make the best hearing products they can, have considerable research and development budgets, and by offering people the right number of choices helps nudge people to improve their hearing health, which also enhances people’s quality of life.

What do you do if you feel pressured to spend over your budget?

Please be aware that when you are looking for hearing aids, some hearing care professionals always recommend top-of-the-range hearing aids, regardless of lifestyle or budget considerations. If you feel pressured to make a quick decision outside your budget, take a breath, ask for a quote, and leave, advising that you will consider your options. If offered extra discounts for buying now, you may want to ‘run for the hills’.

Expert Fitting Advice

After fitting many Sphere Infinio Hearing Aids, we have found in our follow-up appointments that some customers are not getting the most out of the AI DEEPSONIC chip and the Spheric speech clarity program.

If you already have these hearing aids and are hoping for better performance in background noise, visiting your hearing care professional and looking at your datalogging might help. Your hearing aids log how long they have been on and the programs that have been activated.

Anonoymous datalogging of a customer wearing Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio Hearing Aids

In the image above, you can see that this customer has used the hearing aids’ automatic program 100% of the time they have been wearing them. The Speech in Loud Noise program has only been activated 1% of the time. The customer reported that they had been in noisy situations occasionally, and though they could hear speech, they were hoping for less listening effort.

How to adjust in spheric speech in loud noise in Phonak target software

To address the customers’ feedback and improve the hearing aids’ performance, we changed some settings in the hearing aid via Phonak’s fitting software, Target. In the image above, you can see the activation level option and a slider to the right. The default setting is in the centre with Loud Noise written below it. The default activates the Spheric Speech program when the background noise reaches 65 dB. We reduced the level when the program activates.

We also added the Spheric Speech in Loud noise program as an additional program which the customer could activate manually anytime they wanted via the hearing aid or the myPhonak App. Being a music lover, we also added an extra music program, which we fine-tuned with the customer, with music playing.

Expert Summary Guide

Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio Hearing Aids are the company’s leading product, designed for users who want to give themselves the best chance of understanding speech in any listening environment.

For those who do not want to or are unsure how to adjust their hearing aids, they can be set to run automatically.

Since they are Bluetooth-enabled devices, users who wish to adjust and customise their hearing aids via the Phonak App and connect them to other devices have many options.

The only difference between the Infinio Sphere 70 and 90 is that the 70 model lacks the Speech Enhancer Feature. This feature works in quieter environments and enhances soft or distant speech.

Sound Hearing has found that nearly everyone who chooses Infinio Sphere selects the Infinio Sphere 90. The difference in price between 90 and 70 is relatively small, so people seem to choose the premium option.

We have found that the size of these hearing aids has prevented some customers from selecting them. Incorporating two chips into the devices has increased their size, and customers with small ears and/or short hair have decided to choose from the smaller Audéo Infinio range.

Expert Fitting Advice

All Phonak Infinio Hearing Aids are sophisticated medical devices. A hearing aid professional should fit them in person at a clinic or in your home. It is not recommended to purchase them online and have them posted to you. Phonak Hearing aids can be fitted with replaceable domes or custom tips and earmolds. Phonak Virto Infinio Titanium and Virto Infinio NW O

Sound Hearing can provide the Phonak Virto Infinio hearing aids from £2295 a pair. Our hearing aids come with a free trial period, a 60-day money-back guarantee, and a 5-year warranty.

Virto Titanium and Virto Infinio NW O (non-wireless omnidirectional) are discussed. The main difference is the material they are made from: one is made of titanium, and the other is made of hard acrylic.

Phonak only released Virto Titanium in 70 Advanced and 90 Premium technology, while Infinio NW O is available in all technology levels.

Titanium Shell: The shell is made of medical-grade Titanium, which is 15 times stronger and thinner than acrylic (the standard hearing aid material).

Custom Fit: Virto Infinio hearing aids are custom-made. A hearing professional must take an impression or scan of your ear. The impression or scan is then sent to the manufacturer, who will design and manufacture it to fit your ear exactly. Phonak uses Biometric Calibration, which uses the ear impression or scan collected by the hearing care professional to customise the shell and the directional performance of the hearing aid.

Phonak does not describe Infinio Titanium or Infinio NW O as IIC or CIC. Instead, they will endeavour to make the smallest hearing aids.

*Severe hearing loss—Some people with severe and profound hearing loss may not be suitable for these hearing aids. Your hearing care professional can advise

Expert Fitting Advice

Though custom hearing aids are suitable for mild hearing loss, some people feel their ears are blocked and experience a hollow echoing of their voice. This is called occlusion and is caused when a hearing aid blocks the ear canal, low-frequency sounds transmitted through the bones and tissues of the head (like speech, swallowing, or chewing) are amplified and trapped in the ear canal, leading to the occlusion effect. To overcome the Occlusion effect, hearing aids have a channel built through them to allow sounds to escape the ear canal. If low-frequency hearing is normal or mild, the occlusion effect may persist, or if the ear canals are too narrow, there may not be enough space to build sufficient venting.

Virto Infinio Titanium and NW O do not have directional microphones. Directional microphones can prioritise sounds from a specific direction (usually from the front) while attenuating sounds from other directions.

Phonak Audeo- Infinio Rechargeable CROS

Phonak Audeo Infinio Rechargeable CROS

  • CROS (contralateral routing of sound) devices are designed for people with asymmetrical or unilateral hearing loss who have unusable hearing in one ear. The user wears the CROS in the ear with no functional hearing and a hearing aid in the better ear. The CROS has microphones that pick up sounds and transmit them to the hearing aid.
  • CROS hearing aids come in one technology level and are compatible with 90, 70, 50 and 30 Infinio hearing aids.
  • Compatible with Phonak Audéo™ Infinio Rechargeable only
  • IP68 Dust and Water Resistant

Expert Advice

A CROS hearing aid should be considered if you have no detectable hearing in one ear. If you have an asymmetrical hearing loss, where the bad ear may have a severe hearing loss, then a CROS or a hearing aid may be the best solution. To determine which solution will work best for you, your hearing aid professional should conduct a speech test in each ear separately. If the speech test hearing results show you could understand words with amplification in the worse ear, then a hearing aid in this ear should provide benefit. If the results show poor or no speech recognition in the worse ear with amplification, the CROS is likely to be your best option.
