Phonak Infinio Hearing Aids: New Models & Technology Levels (Updated 2026)

Phonak Infinio Ultra (Sphere) Hearing Aids

Since this article was first published in September 2024, Phonak has released the Infinio Ultra and Infinio Ultra Sphere (October 2025). The Ultra models use the same hardware as the originals but include a significant firmware upgrade. This article has been updated to reflect the current range.

This post discusses the latest models and technology levels available in the Phonak Infinio hearing aid range: Phonak Audéo Infinio Ultra, Audéo Infinio Sphere Ultra, and Phonak Virto R Infinio hearing aids. We explore the styles and technology currently available with Phonak Infinio hearing aids. Each Infinio model is available at different technology levels, which affect the price you pay. We break down each technology level to help you find which model and technology level is right for you.

  • Waterproof (IP68 water and dust resistant)

Phonak is part of the Sonova Group, which includes the hearing aid manufacturers Unitron and Hansaton. Sonova was founded in 1947 and employs over 18,000 people worldwide. It is headquartered in Stäfa, Switzerland.

Phonak Infinio and Sphere Infinio were released in September 2024, superseding Phonak Lumity and Paradise hearing aids.

Custom-made in-the-ear Phonak Virto Infinio hearing aids — available as CIC or IIC in titanium or acrylic — were released in early 2025, followed by the rechargeable Virto Infinio R ITC in August 2025.

  • In October 2025, Phonak released the Infinio Ultra firmware upgrade for the Audéo Infinio and Audéo Sphere Infinio ranges.
  • New purchases are now sold as Audéo Infinio Ultra and Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere.
  • If you purchased Infinio or Infinio Sphere hearing aids before October 2025, your audiologist can apply the Ultra firmware upgrade in clinic at no cost.

Phonak’s October 2025 upgrade for Infinio Ultra delivered a significant firmware update applied to the existing Audéo Infinio and Audéo Infinio Sphere hardware.
Features include:

  • Enhanced AI speech processing
  • Significantly better battery efficiency
  • Much easier daily maintenance without requiring new hardware
  • Software upgrade but the physical hearing aids are identical to the original models

Pre October 2025 users of Infinio or Infinio Sphere hearing aids can receive the upgrade free of charge

The centrepiece of the upgrade is AutoSense OS 7.0:

  • Developed using 18 times more real-world listening scenarios than AutoSense 6.0.
  • 24% more precise environment detection and smoother automatic programme transitions.
  • Sphere owners get an updated DEEPSONIC chip (version 1.0 to 2.0) with improved Spheric Speech Clarity.
  • Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0 was developed using from over one million real-world hearing aid fittings.

Battery efficiency improves by approximately 30% with the upgrade.

  • Audéo Infinio Ultra R: battery delivers up to 31 hours of use.
  • Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere: battery delivers up to 56 hours of use.
  • Bluetooth connectivity: improved with one-step pairing to the myPhonak app and compatible devices.
  • Feedback manager: Phonak’s Target 11.1 fitting software is now substantially faster, completing in around 10 seconds.

Phonak also introduced EasyGuard – a patented wax-protection dome system that reduces service visits by approximately 38%.

  • EasyGuard domes prevent earwax from passing through the dome and blocking the wax filter at the end of the receiver.
  • Blocked wax filters are among the most common causes of hearing aid malfunctions and the main reason customers need to visit their hearing care provider between scheduled appointments.
  • EasyGuard domes are a replaceable consumable accessory compatible with all Phonak receivers, including 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0/
  • All Infinio owners can benefit from improved wax protection without needing to purchase new hearing aids.
  • You can buy EasyGuard domes from your hearing care provider or from Sound Hearing.

The key difference between the Audéo Infinio Ultra and the Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere is that the Sphere includes an additional dedicated AI chip, DEEPSONIC. All Infinio models feature the ERA chip running AutoSense OS 7.0, but only the Sphere also includes the DEEPSONIC chip, which powers Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0.

The DEEPSONIC chip was trained using a Deep Neural Network (DNN) with 22 million sound samples. With the October 2025 Ultra upgrade, the DEEPSONIC chip was updated from version 1.0 to 2.0, trained on data from over one million real-world fittings gathered during the first year of the product’s life.

Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0 automatically activates in background noise and instantly separates speech from noise in real time from any direction, delivering up to a 10.2 dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio and reducing listening effort by up to 35% compared to traditional beamforming approaches.

Phonak claims that Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0 doubles the likelihood of clean, clear speech in complex listening situations compared to standard directional processing.

Phonak Infinio Ultra Sphere hearing aids are slightly larger than Infinio Ultra hearing aids due to the inclusion of the second DEEPSONIC chip. Your hearing care professional should be able to show you both styles so you can compare, and they will advise which is most suitable for your ear size and lifestyle.

When Phonak develops a new product, it generally releases it in four technology levels. The product components and casing are all the same; the difference is the software loaded onto the device.

The difference in software affects how the hearing aid performs in background-noise situations with multiple voices.

The hearing aid’s performance in quiet situations will be similar at all technology levels.

Phonak has followed the same technology labelling as previous Phonak hearing aid models:

  • Premium – 90
  • Advanced – 70
  • Standard – 50
  • Essential – 30

Phonak Infinio Ultra Sphere is only available in technology levels 70 and 90.

The answer will depend on where you buy the hearing aids and the hearing care professional you see.

At Sound Hearing, we always try to find the best hearing aids for your budget. Our experience has taught us that to have a successful outcome, we need to get three things correct when helping a customer choose hearing aids:

  • Style / Size – a hearing aid that you will be happy to wear
  • Listening needs – a hearing aid that meets your level of hearing loss and listening needs
  • Budget – a hearing aid that is within your budget

Considering these three things will help you choose the best Infinio hearing aid for you.

Finding the right hearing aids begins with a hearing assessment. After the tes, our hearing care professional will help you choose the best Phonak Infinio hearing aids that fit your needs and budget.

Many people instinctively want Infinio Titanium, the smallest hearing aid; however, it uses small, size 10 batteries that need to be changed every 4 to 5 days. Will your eyesight and dexterity allow you to easily change the batteries and remove and insert the hearing devices?

Often, people feel they need to buy top-of-the-range technology, or their hearing care professional may recommend it, such as the Infinio Ultra Sphere 90.

In a utopia where we all have unlimited budgets, then sure, purchase Infinio Ultra Sphere 90; however, consider that the AI features in Sphere only automatically turn on in loud background noise situations. How often are you likely to be in these environments?

Some of our customers spend nearly all their time at home in quiet environments. If you buy Ultra Sphere 90, the AI features may never be activated.

Other customers may have lifestyles in which they deal with complex, noisy environments daily and should consider the best technology their budget allows.

Most Sound Hearing customers choose Infinio Technology level 50 or 90.

For those with quieter lifestyles, some additional technology is still needed to reduce noise when dining out or visiting friends and family.

Compared to Infinio 30, the Infinio 50 Autosense program includes a Comfort in Noise and Speech in Car program, which many people find useful. It improves listening comfort and helps them follow conversations in cars. Technology level 50 also includes the Soundrelax feature, which identifies and reduces sudden loud, unwanted sounds.

Customers seeking premium technology and the best listening experience in all situations choose technology level 90 over 70. The price difference between the products is relatively small. And most customers seem prepared to spend a little extra to get Phonak’s premium product.

Why do manufacturers release different technology levels?

If we assume that the only difference between the Phonak Infinio hearing aids is the software loaded onto them, why do they not just release one model, 90? The 30, 50 and 70 are the same hearing aids as the 90, though with the lower models, technology and features are removed, the cost of production is likely to be the same for each model.

Phonak and all other hearing aid manufacturers likely offer a choice of technology levels for commercial reasons. When given a choice of options and prices, people are more likely to purchase. Research shows that when given only one option, people can experience “single option aversion” and are less likely to buy, as it triggers an automatic desire to seek more options. Too many choices lead to confusion and hesitation, making people less satisfied with their decisions.

Offering 3 to 5 hearing aid options seems to be the right number to enable people to make a decision. Though this may at first glance appear commercially cynical, do consider that hearing aid manufacturers are motivated to make the best hearing products they can, have considerable research and development budgets, and offering people the right number of choices helps nudge people to improve their hearing health, which enhances quality of life.

What do you do if you feel pressured to spend over your budget?

Please be aware that when you are looking for hearing aids, some hearing care professionals may always recommend top-of-the-range models, regardless of your lifestyle or budget. If you feel pressured to make a quick decision outside your budget, take a breath, ask for a quote, and leave, advising that you will consider your options. If offered extra discounts for buying now, you could consider this a ‘red flag’.

Expert Fitting Advice

After fitting many Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere hearing aids, we have found in our follow-up appointments that some customers are not getting the most out of the AI DEEPSONIC chip and Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0.

If you already have these hearing aids and are hoping for better performance in background noise, visiting your hearing care professional and reviewing your datalogging may help. Your hearing aids log how long they have been worn and which programmes have been activated.

Anonymous datalogging of a customer wearing Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio Hearing Aids

In the image above, you can see that this customer used the hearing aids’ automatic program 100% of the time they were wearing them. The Speech in Loud Noise program had only been activated 1% of the time. The customer reported that they had occasionally been in noisy situations and, though they could hear speech, they hoped for less listening effort.

How to adjust Spheric Speech in Loud Noise in Phonak Target software

To address the customer’s feedback and improve performance, we adjusted settings in Phonak’s fitting software, Target. In the image above, you can see the activation level option and a slider to the right. The default setting is in the centre, with Loud Noise written below it — this means Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0 activates when background noise reaches 65 dB. We reduced the activation level so the program engages earlier, in quieter background noise.

We also added the Spheric Speech in Loud Noise program as a manual option, which the customer could activate at any time via the hearing aid rocker switch or the myPhonak app. As this customer is a music lover, we also added a dedicated music program, which we fine-tuned with the customer while music was playing.

Expert Summary — Phonak Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere

The Phonak Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere is Phonak’s flagship hearing aid, designed for users who want to give themselves the best possible chance of understanding speech in any listening environment.

For those who prefer not to adjust their hearing aids manually, AutoSense OS 7.0 manages everything automatically, seamlessly switching between programmes as the listening environment changes.

For users who want more control, the myPhonak app and a wide range of compatible accessories offer extensive personalisation and connectivity options.

The only difference between the Infinio Ultra Sphere 70 and 90 is that the 70 model lacks the Speech Enhancer feature. This feature works in quieter environments and enhances soft or distant speech. Sound Hearing has found that nearly everyone who chooses the Infinio Ultra Sphere selects the 90 — the price difference between the two is relatively small, and most customers prefer the premium option.

We have found that the size of these hearing aids has led some customers to choose an alternative. Incorporating two chips increases the device’s size, and customers with smaller ears or shorter hair have sometimes opted for the smaller Audéo Infinio Ultra range instead.

This section covers two non-wireless custom in-ear hearing aids from the Infinio range: the Virto Infinio Titanium and the Virto Infinio NW O (non-wireless, omnidirectional). The main difference between the two is the material they are made from — the Titanium uses a medical-grade titanium shell, while the NW O uses hard acrylic.

The Virto Infinio Titanium is available only in 70 Advanced and 90 Premium technology levels. The Virto Infinio NW O is available across all four technology levels.

Neither model receives the AutoSense 7.0 firmware upgrade — both run AutoSense 6.0. This is due to their ultra-small size, which does not support the full firmware package. This does not affect their core sound quality performance.

Titanium Shell: The shell is made of medical-grade Titanium, which is 15 times stronger and 1/3 the thickness of acrylic — the standard hearing aid shell material. This allows the hearing aid to be made smaller and more durable.

Custom Fit: Virto Infinio hearing aids are custom-made. A hearing professional must take an impression or scan of your ear, which is then sent to Phonak, who will design and manufacture the hearing aid to fit your ear exactly. Phonak uses Biometric Calibration, which uses an ear impression or scan to customise both the shell and the hearing aid’s directional performance.

Phonak does not describe the Virto Infinio Titanium or NW O as IIC or CIC — instead, they try to make the smallest possible hearing aid that your ear canal anatomy allows.

*Severe hearing loss — some people with severe or profound hearing loss may not be suitable for these hearing aids. Your hearing care professional can advise you on alternatives.

**We strongly recommend you do a hearing test to help decide which hearing aids will best meet your listening needs. For the best results, your new hearing aids should be professionally fitted and adjusted according to your specific needs.

Expert Fitting Advice

Although custom hearing aids are suitable for mild hearing loss, some people feel their ears are blocked and experience a hollow, echoing sound when they speak.

This is called occlusion. It occurs when a hearing aid blocks the ear canal, causing low-frequency sounds transmitted through the bones and tissues of the head — such as your own speech, swallowing, or chewing — to become amplified and trapped in the ear canal.

To overcome the occlusion effect, hearing aids are built with a vent channel to allow low-frequency sounds to escape the ear canal.

However, if low-frequency hearing is normal or only mildly reduced, the occlusion effect may persist. In some cases, if the ear canal is too narrow, there may not be enough space to build sufficient venting.

The Virto Infinio Titanium and NW O use omnidirectional microphones rather than directional microphones.

Omnidirectional microphones capture sound equally from 360 degrees around the wearer, rather than focusing on sounds originating from a specific direction.

Directional microphones prioritise sounds from a specific direction – usually from in front – while reducing sounds from other directions. This is particularly beneficial in background noise.

Customers who regularly need to hear speech in noisy environments may find the Audéo Infinio Ultra R or Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere better suited to their needs because of the dual mic and Spheric Speech Clarity features.

Phonak Audeo Infinio Rechargeable CROS

  • What is it? A CROS (contralateral routing of sound) device is designed for people with asymmetrical or unilateral hearing loss who have unusable hearing in one ear.
  • What does it do? The user wears the CROS transmitter in the ear with no functional hearing and a hearing aid in the better ear. The CROS has microphones that pick up sounds and transmit them to the hearing aid.
  • Compatibility: CROS hearing devices come in one technology level and are only compatible with Phonak Audéo™ Infinio Rechargeable hearing aids (technology levels: 90, 70, 50 and 30).
  • Waterproof: The Phonak Audeo Infinio Rechargeable CROS has an IP68 rating (dust and water resistant).

Expert Advice

A CROS hearing device should be considered if you have no detectable hearing in one ear.

If you have asymmetrical hearing loss, where the bad ear may have severe hearing loss, a CROS or hearing aid may be the best solution.

To determine which solution will work best for you, your hearing aid professional should conduct a speech test in each ear separately.

  • If the results show you can understand words with amplification in the worse ear, then a hearing aid in this ear should provide benefit.
  • If the results show poor or no speech recognition in the worse ear with amplification, the CROS is likely your best option.

Expert Fitting Advice

The Phonak Virto Infinio R is an excellent option for people who want the discretion of a custom in-ear hearing aid without sacrificing wireless connectivity or rechargeable convenience. It delivers performance comparable to the Audéo Infinio Ultra R but in a smaller, more discreet form factor.

As with all custom in-ear hearing aids, occlusion can be a consideration for people with normal or near-normal low-frequency hearing. Your audiologist will assess this at the fitting stage and build appropriate venting into the shell where ear canal size permits.

Unlike the non-wireless Virto Infinio Titanium and NW O, the Virto Infinio R features directional microphones, making it a much stronger performer in background noise. It is the most capable custom in-ear option in the Infinio range for customers who need hearing support in challenging listening environments.

Phonak Infinio Chargers

Phonak Infinio hearing aids use specific, model-matched charging docks that feature magnetic retention and USB-C connectivity. Standard versions and heavy-duty Sphere variants require different docks.
