Impartial Advice
Sound Hearing is an independent hearing care provider, which means we work with all hearing aid brands and can offer impartial expert advice. Whether you’re looking for the smallest hidden hearing aids, the most advanced artificial intelligence-powered hearing aids, or simple-to-use, fully automatic rechargeable hearing aids, Sound Hearing can help you navigate and choose the right hearing solution.
Most other organisations providing hearing aids, such as Boots, Hidden Hearing, Amplifon, and Specsavers, are owned by a hearing aid manufacturer or have chosen only to work with one or two hearing aid brands. Therefore, they are limited in the hearing solutions they can offer.
Not everyone notices their hearing health has changed.
The most common type of hearing loss is sensorineural hearing loss, which affects most adults as they age. Often, patients say they can still hear speech, though it is no longer clear, especially when in noisy places or watching some programs on TV. Since this hearing loss has a gradual progression, many patients have not noticed the deterioration and feel they just need others to speak up. TV actors should pronounce their words like they used to, and they certainly would not benefit from a hearing test and hearing aids.
Let us test your hearing and explain the results.
Our audiologists all have experience helping patients accept that their hearing health may have changed. We are patient and compassionate in explaining hearing loss in easy-to-understand terms. If you would benefit from amplification, we can demonstrate hearing aids in your home so the patient can hear the difference and accept that they need help to hear better.
We can then guide you through different types and technology levels of hearing aids available, helping you choose hearing aids that you will be happy to wear, meet your listening needs and match your budget.
Ongoing Support on your journey to better hearing
Our commitment extends beyond fitting hearing aids; we aim to empower patients and their carers with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective hearing aid use and care. This comprehensive support helps maximise the benefits of hearing aids, ensuring comfort, reliability, and consistent performance. Additionally, we provide guidance on troubleshooting common issues and advice on when to seek professional assistance.
We understand that adapting to hearing aids can be gradual, so our audiologists are always available for follow-up consultations to fine-tune device settings and address any concerns. This personalised approach ensures that each patient’s unique hearing needs are met, improving their overall quality of life.
If you have complex needs, our standard service includes follow-up and aftercare appointments for life. Many patients need the hearing aids set low initially to help with rehabilitation. As they get used to amplification and ‘hearing the world’ again, we can increase the volume to ensure they get the full benefit from the hearing aids.
Sound Hearing provides ongoing support and encouragement to ensure our patients get the most from their hearing aids. We also offer users and carers an individual management plan, education, and training. Hence, they know how to insert and remove hearing aids, change the batteries, use the charger, and train with cleaning and maintenance.
Furthermore, our individual management plans are tailored to accommodate specific patient lifestyle requirements, hearing loss severity, and related health conditions. This holistic care model fosters confidence and independence in managing hearing health effectively.
NHS hearing aids
Sound Hearing does not provide NHS hearing aids. To access NHS audiology services, you usually contact your GP and receive a referral, though a self-referral system is available in some postcodes.
If you see an NHS hearing provider, they will assess your hearing and, if you fit the criteria, fit hearing aids free of charge as a long-term loan.
NHS hearing aids are typically BTE Hearing Aids, with free batteries and service. The NHS provider will normally contract with a single manufacturer who provides hearing aids only for NHS dispensing. These hearing aids are locked to NHS computers; therefore, Sound Hearing cannot access the settings for reprogramming.
With its centralised model, the NHS may be the largest dispenser of hearing aids in the world. It is hard to find another country where eligible citizens can receive free hearing aids and care.
In our experience, many customers find getting the support and maintenance once they have their NHS hearing aids difficult. Contacting the audiology hospital departments for a hearing aid repair, batteries, and support can be time-consuming.
Sound Hearing has an online shop that provides spare parts for all NHS hearing aids and compatible Bluetooth assistive listening devices. NHS hearing aid spare parts make up a large proportion of the spares we send, suggesting patients are struggling or unaware of how to access these parts via the NHS.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the warning signs of hearing loss?
Experiencing difficulty understanding speech or frequently asking others to repeat themselves may indicate a need for a hearing test, particularly as you age or if there’s a family history of hearing loss. Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears) is also a sign that shouldn’t be ignored. It’s recommended to have a hearing test at least once every ten years before age 50, and every three years after that. Certain occupations or hobbies that expose you to loud noises may necessitate more frequent testing to detect any potential impact on your hearing ability. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.
What if I have a problem with my hearing aids?
Sound Hearing offers service on demand. If your hearing aids are not performing well or your hearing has changed, don’t hesitate to contact us and make an appointment.
Can you demonstrate hearing aids in the home?
Sound Hearing carries demonstration hearing aids from all the leading manufacturers. We can often leave you with them for a few days.
Can you do a hearing test at home?
Sound Hearing uses high-quality and portable audiometers, enabling us to perform a hearing test in your home. Nearly all homes are quiet enough to conduct a hearing test and receive accurate results. High street hearing centres often need a soundproof hearing booth since the background noise from the reception, shop, or street is too high for an accurate hearing test.
Can I come to your premises for a consultation, or do you only make house visits?
Sound Hearing specialises in providing hearing tests and hearing aids in the home. We also work with the Bexley Hearing Centre for people who wish to visit a clinic for audiological services.
Will insurance cover hearing aids?
In the UK, private healthcare insurance does not cover the cost of hearing aids. Please do not take our word for this; check your policy. Home insurance may cover the loss or theft of hearing aids.
What is the average cost of a good set of hearing aids in the UK?
The average cost of hearing aids in the UK will likely be around £2500, but this average cost will vary from business to business and region to region.
Should I buy my hearing aids online?
Sound Hearing Aids does not recommend buying your hearing aids from an online shop that will post them to you. You need at least one in-person appointment to ensure the hearing aids are fitted to your ears correctly. The right dome (fixing in the ear) and receiver wire must be used to ensure the hearing aid acoustics are correct and the hearing aid is securely fitted to prevent it from falling out of the ear and being lost.
Sound Hearing recommends finding a hearing care provider to provide ongoing face-to-face support. Hearing Aids often need updating, which cannot be completed remotely. If your hearing aid needs repair, it often needs reprogramming and reconnecting to your mobile phone—this service cannot be completed remotely.
Many online providers may have many positive reviews. Would these reviews still be positive if requested 2 to 3 years after purchase?
How often should I change the domes and filters on my hearing aids?
The most common cause of poor hearing aid performance or failure is blockage caused by earwax. The hearing aid can usually be restored by changing the filter, dome, receiver, or tubing. How often is very individual and will depend on how much wax your ear produces. For some people, the filter may need changing, and the dome needs cleaning weekly. For others, it is every 6 months or so.
Finding the correct spares for your hearing aid is essential and can be difficult. We hope we have designed our online shop, www.shop.soundhearing.org, to simplify the process. You can search by finding your hearing aid, and then the correct spares for your device will be listed. The NHS offers free hearing aids in the UK, though accessing the spare parts can be time-consuming. Our Shop stocks all the spares you need for NHS hearing aids.
Can you help with NHS hearing aids?
We don’t supply NHS hearing aids, but we do supply spares and accessories. You need a GP referral or to check self-referral options in your area for NHS audiology services.
Do you treat balance problems?
Yes, we screen for balance disorders and vertigo during hearing assessments. If we find issues, we’ll refer you to your GP, who can forward you to ENT specialists for further evaluation.
Can children use your services?
Our home visits are primarily for adult age-related hearing loss. We recommend pediatric specialists through NHS referrals for parents with young children and those in full-time education.
Do you offer postal services for spares?
Yes. We post all hearing aid spares UK-wide via Royal Mail. Visit our online shop for batteries, domes and Bluetooth accessories.
I’m elderly and homebound. Can you help?
Yes, we specialise in home visits for older adults. We bring full audiology services to your home – no need to head out!
How does the referral process work?
If we find complex issues during your test, we’ll provide a written referral for your GP to access ENT services or private consultants.
What if I develop problems after fitting?
Our Standard Service plan includes lifelong aftercare. Contact us for adjustments – we’ll troubleshoot issues remotely or schedule a follow-up visit.
Do you offer hearing therapy?
Our core service is comprehensive audiology care. We focus on hearing assessments and hearing aid solutions. We don’t directly offer hearing therapy. This often involves specialist rehabilitation and counselling beyond the scope of initial hearing aid fittings. If we think you’d benefit from this support, we can help you with contact details for local hearing therapy providers.
