Types of invisible hearing aids

The two most common types that the hearing aid industry manufactures are:

• Completely in the canal (CIC), hearing aids are slightly larger and can fit more powerful receivers to help with severe hearing loss. Push buttons and ear-to-ear technology may also be included.

Other types:

• Crossover: Phonak does not specify whether the new Infinio Titanium hearing aid is IIC or CIC.
• Extended Wear: The Phonak Lyric is a unique device—the world’s smallest hearing aid—that can stay in the ear permanently for up to three months.

To make an IIC the smallest version, the wearer will need an ear canal large enough to fit the device. If your ear canal is too small, the manufacturer will advise that they cannot build the device for your ear anatomy and recommend the CIC version and, occasionally, the In-the-canal version for the very smallest ears.

These are non-rechargeable hearing aids, and since Starkey has included Bluetooth components and an aerial that needs to protrude from the ear canal, they are unlikely to be the smallest and most completely invisible hearing aids. Starkey also offers a non-wireless range of discreet hearing aids called the Signature Series. Though not discussed in this article, Starkey Signature may be the perfect hearing aid for users looking for a simple-to-use invisible hearing aid without Bluetooth and wireless connectivity.

• Hearing Loss Range: The IIC is suitable for mild and moderate hearing loss, while the CIC should be able to fit a severe hearing loss.
• Technology Levels: Oticon Own SI are available in 4 hearing aid technology levels.

Expert Insight

Own SI is Oticon’s most discreet hearing aid, available in CIC and IIC form. Oticon is excellent at making virtually invisible hearing aids for any ear shape.

However, we find that the microphones with a T-Cap filter are difficult to change and can fail, requiring the hearing aid to be returned to Oticon for a repair.

Signia Silk Charge&Go IX Hearing Aids

Signia Silk Charge&GO IX hearing aids are the same as Rexton Reach InoX-CIC Li.

• Released Date: 2023
• Universal Fit: Signia Earwear 3.0 domes and sleeves come in various sizes and acoustic options, and fit onto Silk IX hearing aids, ensuring most ears can be fitted.
• Rechargeable: The world-first rechargeable hearing aid CIC with Qi Charging (charge on-the-go).
• Three Technology Levels: Silk IX 3, Silk IX 5 and the top of the range Silk IX 7.
• User Control: Adjust devices using the Phone Signia APP
• Advanced Technology: Silk IX includes Binaural OneMic Directionality and uses the same technology as in Insio IX discussed above.

Signia says Silk IX charge&go has a battery life of up to 28 hours. The charging case has a battery built for charging on the go. Some customers have reported that the battery needs a boost in the charger after a long day of use.

Over-the-counter OTC hearing aids

OTC hearing aids are a confusing part of the hearing aid market. The term has become popular since the US FDA established the hearing aid category in 2022. The FDA regulations only apply to the US.

In the UK, you will often see social media adverts for virtually invisible hearing aids that fit any ear shape. They claim to be as good as traditional hearing aids at a fraction of the price. These devices would not meet the US definition of an OTC hearing aid, have probably not met any EU or UK regulations, and should not be called a hearing aid.

So what are they? They are simple hearing amplifiers and are not prescription hearing aids. Customers who have tried treating hearing loss with these devices often report poor sound quality, especially in background noise, and a poor fit.

There are companies in the UK that enable you to purchase prescription hearing aids online. You send your hearing results to them, and then they program hearing aids and send them to you. Further adjustments are made online.

Signia Silk is the only in-the-ear hearing aid that enables online programming and does not require an impression or fitting by a hearing aid professional. Signia Silk can be fitted with 14 different domes and sleeves depending on ear shape and hearing loss. How online vendors know which sizes to send you is a mystery.

Sound Hearing recommends at least one face-to-face appointment for all hearing aid fittings. If the online hearing aid is less expensive than buying from us, let us know, and we should be able to come to a compromise.
